Teething is a natural milestone in your child’s development, but it can be challenging for both parents and babies. If your little one is going through this stage or you’re preparing for it, here’s what you need to know, with advice from Paula Lobo DMD:
Understanding the signs of teething can help you distinguish between normal discomfort and potential problems.
Typical symptoms include: irritability, difficulty sleeping, fussiness, excessive drooling, and chewing on fingers.
Contact your pediatric dentist if your baby experiences fever, rash, diarrhea, or severe swelling, redness, or bleeding of the gums.
Soothing a teething baby can be tough. To relieve sore gums, offer a chilled pacifier or teething ring, or gently massage their gums with a clean finger or damp gauze.
Avoid medicating your child during teething, as this can mask signs of illness. Follow the guidance of your child’s healthcare provider.
Avoid using topical pain relievers, as they can be unsafe for young children. Homeopathic teething gels and tablets aren’t evaluated or approved by the FDA for safety.
Once your baby’s first tooth appears, it’s time to start dental care. Gently wipe their tooth and gums with a damp washcloth at least twice daily and before bedtime. When two teeth touch, begin cleaning between them daily with floss or an interdental brush.
Schedule your child’s first dental visit by age 1 or within 6 months of their first tooth. Keep a positive attitude about the dentist to make the visit comfortable and stress-free. We’ll check their teeth and ensure a positive first experience. Contact Kind Kids Pediatric Dentistry to schedule an appointment with Paula Lobo, DMD.
