Sealants

Shielding Your Child’s Teeth from Cavities

At Kind Kids Pediatric Dentistry, we use dental sealants to provide an extra layer of protection against tooth decay, especially on the hard-to-reach chewing surfaces of molars and premolars. These back teeth are more prone to cavities because of their deep grooves and pits, which can easily trap food and plaque.

What Are Dental Sealants?

Sealants are thin, protective coatings applied to the chewing surfaces of the back teeth. They act as a physical barrier, keeping food particles and bacteria out of the grooves and reducing the risk of cavities.

Who Can Benefit from Sealants?

Sealants are most effective when applied to permanent molars and premolars soon after they erupt—usually around ages 6 to 14. This helps protect the teeth during the most cavity-prone years. However, adults without fillings or decay in their molars can also benefit from sealants.

How Are Sealants Applied?

Sealant application is a quick, painless, and non-invasive procedure. Here’s what to expect:

  1. Cleaning – The teeth are thoroughly cleaned to remove any plaque or food particles.
  2. Drying – The tooth surfaces are dried and isolated to ensure good adhesion.
  3. Application – A special liquid sealant is brushed onto the chewing surfaces.
  4. Curing – The sealant is hardened using a safe curing light, bonding it to the tooth.

Once cured, the sealant forms a durable shield over the tooth enamel.

How Long Do Sealants Last?

Sealants can last for several years with proper care, though they will be checked during regular dental visits to make sure they’re still intact. If needed, sealants can be easily reapplied.

Important Note: Sealants Aren’t a Substitute for Oral Hygiene

While sealants are a great tool for preventing decay, they are not a replacement for brushing, flossing, or professional dental cleanings. Daily oral hygiene and regular checkups are essential to your child’s overall dental health.
