Preventative Dentistry

Keeping Your Child’s Smile Healthy for Life

At Kind Kids Pediatric Dentistry, we believe the best dental issues are the ones that never happen. That’s why we focus on preventative dentistry—a proactive approach designed to protect your child’s smile from tooth decay, gum disease, and other oral health problems before they begin.

Led by Dr. Paula Lobo, our compassionate team provides expert preventive care in a child-friendly, welcoming environment. From routine exams to advanced preventive treatments, we support your child’s oral health every step of the way.

Why Preventive Dental Care Matters

Preventive dental care helps children avoid pain, anxiety, and complex procedures down the road. It also instills healthy habits that can last a lifetime. According to the American Dental Association, children should have dental checkups and cleanings every six months to ensure early detection and treatment of any concerns.

Our Preventive Dentistry Services

At Kind Kids Pediatric Dentistry, we offer a full range of preventive services tailored to meet the unique needs of children at every stage of development.

  • Comprehensive Exams: Regular dental exams allow Dr. Lobo to assess your child’s oral health, track dental development, and identify any issues early—before they become more serious.
  • Professional Cleanings: Routine cleanings remove plaque, tartar, and surface stains that brushing at home may miss. They also give us the opportunity to educate children and parents on proper brushing and flossing techniques.
  • Digital X-rays: We use low-radiation digital X-rays to safely and accurately view areas that cannot be seen during a visual exam, such as between teeth or beneath the gums.
  • Fluoride Treatment: Fluoride strengthens enamel and helps prevent cavities. It’s a safe, fast, and effective treatment applied directly to the teeth during your child’s visit.
  • Sealants: Dental sealants are a protective coating applied to the chewing surfaces of back teeth (molars), where decay often starts. Sealants act as a barrier against food and bacteria, significantly reducing the risk of cavities.
  • Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF): SDF is a non-invasive option for stopping the progression of early tooth decay, especially useful for children who may not be ready for traditional fillings.
  • Orthodontic Screenings: We monitor the growth and alignment of your child’s teeth and jaws to detect orthodontic issues early. Early evaluation allows for timely referral and potential intervention when it matters most.
  • Space Maintainer: If a baby tooth is lost prematurely, a space maintainer may be used to keep the space open until the permanent tooth is ready to erupt. This helps avoid future crowding or misalignment.

Education and Home Care Guidance

At each visit, our team takes the time to educate both children and parents about proper oral hygiene, nutrition, and habits that support strong, healthy teeth. We encourage regular brushing with fluoride toothpaste, daily flossing, and making smart snack choices.

Start Early, Stay Healthy

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends that children visit the dentist by their first birthday or within six months of their first tooth. Early visits help your child feel comfortable at the dentist’s and allow us to establish a preventive care routine that supports long-term oral health.
